Local Summer!

Here at the Jersey Shore, the locals refer to the weeks after Labor Day as “Local Summer.”  It’s that time of year when the water is warm, the daytime sun is strong, and the crowds have gone home—mostly back to North Jersey and New York. In a sense, the beach has been handed back over to the locals. That includes Kim and me! 

I don’t complain much about the crowds who come down to the shore in July and August. After all, those who come to their summer homes, or for a week or even a day help so many of the local businesses survive. And I suppose, the crowds bring a bit of excitement to the area. But there is something refreshing about being able to go to the beach this time of year and feel the change in the vibe—i.e., a much more relaxed vibe—and enjoy a bit more space on the sand. And, it helps me appreciate all the more that Kim and I have been blessed to live where we live. 

I say that because, I hear so many people complain about living here in Monmouth County, NJ—in spite of “local summer.” They complain about the taxes, the crowds, the cost of living, what it used to be like, what it’s become, etc. And yes, I’m sure much has changed and will continue to change.  If we’re not careful, however, we can end up as people who are filled with complaints rather than those who are filled with gratitude and contentment. 

On the other hand, thinking about where we live as a blessing has the potential to change our day to day mindset regarding our lives and our world. For the truth is, we can complain about many things in our lives if we look at them from a negative perspective. But if we will stop and take note of what we have and realize that so much of it is a blessing from the hand of God, we may find ourselves with less complaints, more gratitude, and a greater sense contentment. 

As the Apostle Paul wrote, “…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation….” (Philippians 4:11-12 - NIV) And, “…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) 

Let’s do our best to put aside the complaining, and to be thankful for every season we may be in, for every place we may be living, and for all the little things that we so easily take for granted. And I for one will be grateful for “local summer.”
