A Cloudy, Cool, and Rainy Memorial Day!

Today is Memorial Day 2026. It’s normally a day for parades, BBQ’s, and lots of other outdoor activities. Unfortunately, however, for us here in New Jersey, as well as along much of the Northeast, it’s a cloudy, cool, and rainy day. Of course we will try to make the best of it. But it’s not the Memorial Day we picture in our minds as we look forward to this weekend that has become known as “the unofficial start to summer.”

Normally on this day I put the flag out first thing (which I have done). Kim and I might go for a morning bike ride. Later on, we would light up the grill, often with some friends. Today, however, is going to be a bit different. Not too much is going to happen in the way of outdoor activities.

Yet, in spite of the weather not cooperating with our plans, it is still Memorial Day. That is, it is a yet the day in which we are meant to pause and remember those soldiers who have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is a day to give thanks for those whose lives have been lost in the fight for a better and free world. And it is a day to pray for families who are grieving the loss a soldier on a very personal level.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Give to everyone what you owe them…if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” (Romans 13:7 – NIV)  Surely, we owe respect and honor to those who have given their lives on the battlefield, fighting for our freedom. Respect and honor is due to all those who have fought on our behalf, but most especially those who did not return. It’s the least we can offer to those who have laid down their lives on behalf of our nation.

So on this Memorial Day, although we may not be able to hit the beach or light up the grill (or maybe you will!), let’s take time to pause and in our hearts and minds offer the respect and honor to those soldiers for whom this day is all about.

Have a great and blessed Memorial Day!
