The Playlist of Your Life!

One of the things I like about using a music service such as Spotify is the ability to set up playlists. By doing so, one can choose a genre of music, a set of artists or songs that fit into that genre, or even the kind of beat or vibe one wants and pull together a number of songs into a playlist. I have a bunch of playlists that I use at various times, some based on a favorite artist, some based on what I’m going to use that playlist for. For example, I have a Workout/Running playlist, a Prayer playlist, a Danny Gokey playlist, a James Taylor playlist, a Spanish Worship playlist, and more. I even have one I call, “TK4EVER”—I’ll let you guess what that one is!

The really nice thing about listening to music through a music service, as opposed to listening on the radio, is that we as listeners are completely in control. We get to choose exactly what we want to hear. And, if we don’t want to hear a song or get tired of one, we can skip or even delete that song.  Again, we as listeners are completely in control of our playlists.

In some ways our lives are much like a playlist. We get to choose the kind of message and vibe we send out by the way in which we live. Every day, our lives are like a list of songs being played, not just for ourselves but to be heard by the people around us.

So, here's a good question for us to consider: If someone was to listen to a playlist of songs that represents your life, what would that playlist sound like? What kind of songs would be on that playlist? Would it be a set of songs that represent a life of anger, selfishness, and self-centeredness. Would it be filled with songs that speak of a lifestyle of hedonism, materialism, greed, and lust? Or would the playlist of your life speak of a life that has been touched by Christ, lived in relationship with God, and bringing blessing to others? Would it be a list of songs that speak of a life filled with peace, faith, hope, joy, and most of all love?

Jesus said, “…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:16). We might hear Jesus’ words as a challenge to examine the playlist of our lives. After all, every day that playlist is being played for people all around us. They catch the “tunes” of our lives by the words we say and what we do. And someday, the playlist of our lives will be reviewed by those who come to eulogize us after we pass away. What will that playlist sound like?

Let’s make sure the playlist of our lives is such that the people around us hear songs that bring blessing into their lives and that point them to God, our heavenly Father!

Have a great day!
