What Are You Spreading?

Today, in the midst of this pandemic, there’s a lot of talk about the fact that any one of us might unknowingly spread this virus. After all, we continue to see the spread of the virus and the effects it is having upon our lives, often by people who don’t yet know they have it. Not only is there concern over the spread of the virus, but there’s concern over the spread of misinformation, the spread of conspiracy theories, and the spread of anger, frustration, and even hatred.  There are so many negative things that can be spread by means of a social media post or a misspoken word.

As I hear some people talk or as I read their posts, I wonder what their intention really is. I understand that people might be tired of having to deal with this virus and even hate the thought of wearing a mask over their face. But why get so angry and political over it all? Why spread half-truths and conspiracies that are based on conjecture and presuppositions? Why not think the best and do what seems to be best for all peoples—e.g. wearing a face mask when needed? After all, there are thousands of people across our world who are yet being infected, becoming sick, and hundreds who are dying.

I want to challenge those of us who are followers of Jesus, even as I challenge myself, to be careful of what it is we spread. The Bible speaks of being considerate towards the needs of others, of laying down our lives for the sake of others, of being kind and gentle. We are warned against “bearing false witness” (which happens when we spread unsubstantiated conspiracy theories or half-truths). We are told to make sure our words are always “full of grace.”  Our lives are not to be lived based on just what is best for ourselves, but what is best for those around us—for the wellbeing and prosperity of our communities at large. Thus, we want to be careful not spread the wrong things.

On the other hand, there are some things we ought to spread: kindness and compassion, peace and joy, the love of God, and most of all the hope that is found through the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the book of Acts, we consistently read of how, through the ministry of the church, “the word of the God spread. The Apostle Paul writes, But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.” (2 Corinthians 2:14 – NIV) To the Thessalonians he wrote of, “…Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith….” (1 Thessalonians 3:2 – NIV)

Let’s not spend our time as Christians spreading those things that are not helpful or edifying. Let’s not use our speaking voice and/or social media posts to spread frustration and anger. Rather, let’s use our time, energy, and resources to spread the tremendous blessing that is found in the good news that Jesus has brought to us!  Let’s do all we can to spread the incredible love of God found in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Have a great day!
