The Roar of the Wind
Just
a couple of nights ago, we here in the Northeast experienced a line of storms that
had first brought tornados to the south and then heavy wind, rain, and
thunderstorms (and even some tornados) to our region. That night, as Kim and I lay in bed, there
were times when it felt like the whole house was shaking. Although there was no tornado, we could hear
the wind roar as it blew through the trees and against the house. It felt as if it could intensify at any
moment and blow out a window. Thankfully it did not. But the roar of the wind was surely quite
intense—and enough to keep us awake at least part of the night.
The
roar of the wind that night makes me think of what it must have been like for
the believers on the Day of Pentecost as described in Acts 2. There we are told that, as those 120
followers of Jesus were praying, “Suddenly
a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the
whole house where they were sitting.” (Acts 2:2 – NIV) And,
with the sound of the wind came the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the
believers, just as Jesus had promised, and they all began to speak in “other
tongues.” Soon everyone else around them
was asking what was going on. And, many came to saving faith in Jesus that
day.
Jesus said, “The
wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it
comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 – NIV) Although the wind’s direction is
unpredictable, it’s sound and it’s affect are very evident. In the same way, when the Holy Spirit works
in and through our lives, his affect will be seen and heard by all—his work will
be evident. There will be the sound of
the wind blowing through our lives and into the lives of others!
I pray that the roar of the wind would be evident
through the lives of each of us who calls ourselves a follower of Jesus
Christ. I pray that today you might
experience the roar of the wind!
Have a great day!
